Tendonitis

Tendonitis

Tendonitis is irritation or inflammation of a tendon, the tough cord that connects muscle to bone. It usually builds up from repetitive motion or overuse rather than a single injury, and it tends to settle into the same spots: the shoulder, elbow, wrist, knee, and the Achilles tendon at the heel. The pain is often worse with activity and with the specific motion that caused it. OS1 treats tendonitis on a walk-in basis, the same day, with no appointment and no referral needed.

Causes

Tendonitis is typically caused by:

  • Overuse or repetitive motion: Repetitive movements, such as those seen in sports or certain occupations, can overload tendons, causing microtears and inflammation.
  • Aging: Tendons lose elasticity as people age, increasing the risk of injury.
  • Acute injuries: A sudden increase in physical activity or direct trauma to the tendon can trigger inflammation.
  • Biomechanical imbalances: Improper movement mechanics or alignment issues can place excess stress on tendons.

Symptoms

  • Pain localized around the tendon, often worsening with movement or activity
  • Swelling and tenderness in the affected area
  • A grating sensation or stiffness in the joint
  • Limited range of motion due to discomfort

Diagnosis

Tendonitis can feel like other problems, so getting the diagnosis right matters. An OS1 physician examines the area and, when it is useful, uses on-site imaging in the same visit. Digital X-ray can rule out a fracture or arthritis, and an open MRI can show the tendon itself if the picture is not clear or the problem has been going on a long time. Knowing exactly which tendon is irritated, and ruling out what it is not, is what makes the treatment plan work.

Treatment

Most tendonitis improves without surgery. Your OS1 provider builds a plan that may include modifying the activity that is aggravating the tendon, a brace or support to rest it, anti-inflammatory care, and a cortisone injection when the inflammation is significant or slow to settle. For some patients, a PRP (platelet-rich plasma) injection is an option to support healing in a stubborn tendon. Your provider explains which approach fits your case and follows up on your progress. If the tendon problem turns out to need surgery, OS1 refers you to the right specialist.

Prevention

  •  Gradually increasing activity levels
  • Incorporating stretching and strengthening exercises to improve tendon resilience
  • Ensuring proper ergonomic and biomechanical movement patterns.
